FT Magazine X Jay Rayner by Lizzie Mayson

If you’ve been to an upmarket restaurant in recent months, you might’ve noticed something of a renaissance: the resurgence of the ‘on-toast’ dish. Commissioned by the Financial Times, Lizzie was enlisted to visualise Jay Raynor’s article which honed in on his favourite - cheese on toast.

But of course, Jay Raynor being Jay Raynor, it was never going to be that simple. His takes range from the warming to the downright sexy, and Lizzie’s work effortlessly slides between the extremes.

The warm hug of a classic cheese on toast could only be shot from the comfort of bed. Other ingredients required a more luxurious setting, we’re looking at you Lobster, so Lizzie incorporated champagne and a velvet sofa for that special occasion feeling. It was all captured on flash, with some motion drag added to reduce the harshness but still keep that incidental, at-home feeling.
